Journey of Sisterhood & Self-Discovery

How It All Started

The DIAMONDS Girls Program was born in 2009 from a heartfelt desire among Sierra Leonean mothers in the U.S. to connect more deeply with their daughters through nature and reflection. What began as a simple retreat soon blossomed into a structured program with life-changing impact. Thanks to the support of the Sierra Leone Seventh-Day Adventist Church, two cabins were secured at the National Park in Dumfries, Virginia, setting the stage for a transformational three-day, two-night experience.

The First DIAMONDS Retreat

Sixteen girls, mostly daughters of African immigrants in the DMV (DC–Maryland–Virginia) area, participated in the inaugural retreat alongside three adult mentors. The girls engaged in guided discussions, journaling, team-building activities, and nature walks. Additional volunteer women facilitated workshops by day, delivering a curriculum focused on identity, self-worth, leadership, and resilience. The experience created a safe, nurturing space that left a lasting imprint on all who attended.

Understanding the Need

The program was designed to address the cultural, emotional, and developmental challenges faced by African immigrant girls in the U.S. Navigating between American ideals of beauty, independence, and assertiveness, and African expectations of modesty, respect, and collectivism, many girls experienced internal conflict. These tensions often led to low self-esteem, academic struggles, and social withdrawal.

Our Purpose and Approach

The DIAMONDS Girls Program offers a culturally grounded, holistic approach to personal and collective growth for girls ages 13–19. By providing safe spaces for dialogue and self-expression, the program helps girls:

  • Build authentic relationships with peers and mentors

  • Explore and reconcile their cultural identities

  • Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills

  • Strengthen their voice, confidence, and leadership potential

Program Values and Commitments

Each girl who joins the program commits to the DIAMONDS Girls Promise and agrees to follow a shared Code of Conduct focused on:

  • Respect for self and others

  • Active participation in learning and mentorship activities

  • A willingness to grow and give back to their communities

Girls are encouraged to attend regular meetings, participate in online discussions, and contribute to community service efforts that align with the program's values.

Lasting
  Impact

Many of the original 2009 DIAMONDS Girls have gone on to become accomplished young women—professionals, leaders, and changemakers who continue to reflect on that first retreat as a defining moment in their lives. The program continues to expand across borders, inspiring girls in both the U.S. and Africa to discover who they are and who they are becoming.

The founding of Diamonds Girls in 2009 planted seeds of transformation. It remains a living testimony to the power of community, culture, and collective care in raising the next generation of self-aware, educated, and empowered African women, one diamond girl at a time. This transformation is a beacon of hope, inspiring us to continue our mission.
